London, Bradbury and Evans, 1852-4. Leather. Two volumes of work by Douglas Jerrold. With the bookplate of Sir Edward Watkin to the front pastedown of Mrs Caudles Curtain Lectures. Edward Watkin was a British MP and railway entrepreneur. He was notable for expanding the Metropolitan Railway, the building of the Great Central Main Line and a failed attempt to dig a channel tunnel. These two volumes comprise of Comedies and Dramas as well as The story of a Feather and the Sick Giant and the Doctor Dwarf from Mrs Caudles Lectures. Mrs Caudle's Curtain Lectures were a famous comic series by Jerrold. They were originally published in Punch magazine before being published in book form. Comedies and Dramas comprises of eight plays by Jerrold. Jerrold was a very popular dramatist and was employed to write plays weekly. Douglas William Jerrold was an English dramatist and writer. His reputation came from his brilliant wit. In half calf bindings with paper covered boards. Externally, rubbed to the joints and spines. Loss to head of both spines and backstrip is lifting at the head of Caudle. Rubbing to the extremities. Both boards to Comedies and Drama detached but present due to failing of joints and hinges. Evidence of bookplate removal to front pastedown of Comedies. Bookplate to front pastedown of Caudle's is that of Sir Edward W Watkin. Internally, both volumes are firmly bound. Pages are generally bright with age toning to edges and scattered spots throughout. Good Only . Ill.: None. Good Only .
